Art Bead Love Tour Stop #4...will you be #5?

Welcome to stop #4 on the Art Bead Love Tour!!

The editors over at the Love My Art Jewelry blog came up with this idea a few months ago as a way to spread the art bead love...the more people are aware of handmade components, the more people will appreciate handmade components.  This is a traveling chain of beautiful beads, pendants, and charms...there are rules associated with the traveling (see the bottom of the post) but the basic idea is that one person wins the giveaway on the blog of another.  They receive the chain full of goodies then take some and add some.  After taking a few for myself, I added a bunch more and here's what the chain looks like now:
I'm not a bead maker, but my handmade art bead kind collection is pretty extensive.  So, I went shopping for things to share and came up with what I think is a nice selection of different media--ceramic, glass, enamel, & polymer clay.  Here is a shot of each addition with links to the creators' blogs or shops:
1. lampworked glass rounds by Julianna at StudioJuls (formerly Julsbeads).  She let me make beads in her little shack one time when I lived in Alabama.  It was such a perfect day!!  Now she's following her heart to Oregon.  Good stuff.
2.  Little nuggets of ceramic love from Elaine Ray.  A few years back, I won a lovely giveaway and got a nice handful of Elaine's beads and now I'm ready to share a couple.
3.  A crazy shape of glass that I couldn't resist when I saw them on Etsy from Sari Glassman
4.  Some luscious enamel work from Gardanne
5.  Ahhhh, my first bead love affair started with Lisa New when I found her beads on eBay.  This is one of my originals from back in 2007.  I hoard them like nobody's business.
6.  My sweet friend, Sue, aka Suebeads, from Pittsburgh sent me these little green sugar beads along with a big order.  I love the texture on these.  The color is so minty!
7.  I went through a green/purple combination phase and found this fun and funky set of lampworked glass from Mibellino during some Etsy wandering.
8.  These cute little ceramic houses from Jubilee are so fun!
9.  Oh, my Donna Millard beads...it's hard to part with any, but I am going to share these two rounds with lovely pink florals on a dramatic black background.  It's hard for me to believe that glass can be manipulated this way.
10.  More glass...these disks are from my fave disk maker:  Heather at HMB Studios.  These are some leftover blues from a custom job she did for me a couple of years ago so I could make a special piece for an Air Force charity.
11.  This is a Gaea pendant that I got during a swap...love the femininity!
12.  Some pretty little lampworked disks from Kerry Bogert at Kab's Creative Concepts.  I had these worked up as pendants so they are a great addition to the love chain.
13.  A little ceramic house link from one of my Bead Soup Party partners, Diane Hawkey
14.  Polymer clay sings in the hands of Rebecca, aka Artybecca.  She's another Pittsburgh kinda girl!
15.  More polymer clay, this time from Malodora--this bead is shaped and carved after it's cooked.  Very, very cool.
16.  A ceramic call to the sea from Lisa Stevens
17.  Last but not least, a ceramic and recycled glass pendant from Kristie at Artisan Clay.
And, here is the pile of happiness that I took from the chain!

Now that I've shared all that goodness, it's time to provide some help for those of you interested in entering to be selected as stop #5 on the tour.

Please read through the post below carefully.

The Art Bead Love Tour is an ongoing project to spread the love of handmade to new and exciting places. It’s a way to reach people who may have never stumbled upon the Love My Art Jewelry blog on their own, and give them a chance to share the love of handmade. We chose to use a chain to link beads as a symbol of how this project links us all together~ in our unity to stand behind handmade.
This tour is basically an art bead swap, which will go on and on and on. Here is how it works.

PLEASE....... ....please read the entire post before entering.

The Details:

1. The winner of the chain will be allowed to take up to 30 beads from this chain. They will then replace each bead they took, with another handmade bead, charm or pendant of equal quality. It is so important that the quality of the beads be maintained, so that we can keep the Art Bead Love Tour alive. We want to share consistent quality with the next winner. If you make your own handmade beads or components, it’s a great way to get your beads into the world for people to try them out, or, if you hoard collect art beads, it’s a great way to share your collection and get some new additions as well. (Art Beads should be handmade by an artist, and not mass produced, such as Hill Tribes Silver beads or others like them). Remember the focus is on creating handmade with handmade and beads/components taken should be replaced with beads/components that are made by an individual not an organization.

2. The winner must have a blog, and will post pictures of what was taken and what was added, in order to keep an account of the chains progress and to keep our followers drooling. Please be sure to give credit to the bead artists as well.

3. The winner will then have a giveaway, just like this one, to keep passing the chain on and on. Rules can be copied and pasted from here.

4. When you repost your giveaway (remember you can copy and paste from here)-a list should be added to show where the chain has gone, with links to each previous blog. Ultimately, this will end up being a very long list!

Look where the chain has been……

5. Chain must be shipped to its new home via Priority Small Flat Rate box with delivery confirmation. Please package it carefully.

6. There will be a button on the Love My Art Jewelry Website that links to the current blog and giveaway- so if you have the chain, it will link to your blog, that way our followers can have another chance to win it.

7. You MUST exchange your beads and have your giveaway completed within two weeks of receiving the chain. (Please please please, if you can not adhere to the above rules, do not enter the giveaway at this time. It will go on and on and you can always enter at a later date.) There will be a button on the side bar of our blog so that you can track where the chain currently is.

How to Enter:

1. You must have a blog to enter.

2. Leave a comment below (make sure your email is linked to your blog or leave it in the comment. Entries without emails will not qualify)

3. Share on Facebook, Twitter or your blog for extra chances to win. Leave a comment for each way you share, with a link if possible.

4. Winner will pay shipping and will be billed through paypal-small priority flat rate box with delivery confirmation $6.00.

5. Open only to our readers in the United States- due to problems with tracking and shipping overseas (sorry). Please note- I am having a small giveaway on my blog for our international friends only!!! So hop over to enter.

6. Check back here on February 14th to see if you’ve won.

7. Good luck and share the love of handmade! Please, if you have any questions, you can email Staci directly at staci.lousie@hotmail.com

BTW - Working with Art Beads

It's Bead Table Wednesday, so time to share what I have out on my bead table this week.  Since my AF job has become nearly overwhelming I've had scarce time to actually sit and create so this photo is from a few nights ago...the table hasn't changed, though, since then.

First off, a little play with Artisan Clay pendants for this month's design team.  They're lovely rich green and turquoise so I've been having fun matching things with them.  Kristie wrote a post about them this week on her blog.  I'm mixing them with some lampworked glass from Genea...those little striped sprees and some striped glass headpins.  She's getting ready to move her whole household so decided to have a little sale this week in her Etsy shop...if you're not a "bead" person and you're in the mood for jewelry, some of her original designs are on sale, too.
Artisan Clay Design Team...in work
Here's another view of the table...more art beads in the line up.  There are some Barbara Lewis enameled  beads over there on the right piled up with some of Juls' lampworked glass.  I think it's funny how the orange bead selection all got moved to the back of the table.  I was working on a piece inspired by Marcie's Margie & Me inspiration for the month but got frustrated with the simple stringing design I was trying.  So, moved it all over and got into the green!
Orange on the side
And the next color in line is blue to match up with some more Artisan Clay charms.  I pulled out lampworked hollow glass beads from Kay Bolden.  She's a local artist from Poquoson so I get my beads from my local bead shop but she has an Etsy shop, too.  The little turquoise & raku bits are from Maryse Thillens of GlassBeadArt.  There is a little set of lampworked rounds in there from SueBeads, too!  I recently reported to my husband that I've slimmed down my bead purchases...I realize this doesn't look like it, but there are all beads that I've gotten over months and months...nothing from May!  haaaaaaaaaa
More on the blue
The rest of my beady friends have laid bare their own bead tables for this regular Wednesday update and you can see them in the BTW flickr group!

Art Beads, Memory Wire & Rubber

I have been on an art bead high lately...that's what it's like when you go on an Etsy spree and start buying beads you don't need and then you get tons of little packages in the mail.  It's such a rush!

To help me deal with that addiction and actually give me some justification to do more "support of other artists" I finally sat down to make something.  Memory wire and rubber tubing are two of my favorite things right now.  I just love how easy it is to create something fun and dramatic so quickly.  I have two designs to share...

First, this is a springy piece in honor of the coming season.  I actually have a lot of purple and yellow beads and didn't really think about it until I started looking.  The lead bead in this batch is the etched rondelle from Cherie R. and then the others fell in line:  a disc from HMB Studios, a big rondelle from Libelula, and two shades of purple from SueBeads.  I threw in some bright yellow Swarovski crystal and some purple coils to keep things interesting.  The brown rubber tubing makes it look like leather, but then you get faked out because it just wraps around your wrist without a clasp and stays there!

The second one has a different, more serious, vibe.  The chartreuse-based lampwork from Julsbeads gets mixed with a speckled enameled oval from GardanneBeads for the focal grouping on this one.  I used some cool heishi pearls from a recent trunk show over at Bead Haven along with black rubber tubing to fill in the blanks.  It's just the right balance of beads for a bangle.

I put these both for sale out on my Etsy site.  :)

Beads 2010 Project: Calvin Orr

Way, way back in the beginning of this blog in 2008, I took a trip to visit my friends, The Stanleys, in Hawaii.  In addition to sandy beach adventures and wonderful fun just being together, I found the best bead shop in Honolulu:  The Bead Gallery.  Heck, it was my first jaunt into a bead store like that and I was in heaven!!  I think I made Lauren stay in there with me for at least four hours pawing over every piece in the shop.  To share some of that BGL (Bead Gallery Love) with you, here's The Bead Gallery Blog!

Well, while in the Gallery, I found some completely wonderful lampwork glass beads.  Even with a novice eye (haaaaaaaaa, now that I actually made one myself I'm no novice, right???), I knew these were amazing little works of art.  The creator?  Calvin Orr

Since that trip, I've treasured this piece that I made with a "Calvin Bead" (that's the name Lauren and I gave to these special pieces) that Lauren gave me as a gift.  It's soft and subtle and bold and unique and orange...my kind of bead.  I actually have this one hanging as decoration in my kitchen...when you have a bazillion pieces of jewelry in your house, they have to go somewhere!  haaaaaaaaaa

So why Calvin right now?  Well, with the recent arrival of the Beads 2010 magazine, I was thrilled to see his name listed among the tons of bead sources.  He has a butterfly piece on the "Bugs We Love" page that is so detailed and pretty!  His bio information on The Bead Gallery webpage include this description from a 1999 newspaper article:

"The delicacy of Orr's beads are incongruous with his rough, tattoo-covered exterior. Orr's resume includes stints as a computer cable fabricator, janitor and tattoo artist. But it was his work in stained glass that brought him to lampworking."

That just cracks me up!  And it gives so much life to something that could be "just a bead."

It was serendipity, I suppose, that Lauren's birthday was last week and I just happened to have a delicate purple plumeria Calvin Bead from our very special shopping trip two years ago.  In my art bead bracelet way of late, here's what she got for her birthday:

If it looks kind of small for a bracelet it's because she has skinnie-minnie wrists.  :)  haaaaaaaaa  By the way, it fits her perfectly and she loves it!!  Whoo hoo!!

When Does Collecting Turn Into Hoarding?

Someone in my house has been hoarding handmade lampwork art beads.  Can you even imagine?  haaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I guess my collecting all started when I was in middle school and had to have all the latest cool stickers.  Remember Lisa Frank?  How about Mrs. Grossman's? I still have that sticker book...yes, it has moved with me eight times!  haaaaaaaaaaaa  But, of course I have actually expanded the sticker collection into a whole nightmare (okay, it's actually a daydream) of crafty paper, adornments, glue, more paper and, yes, even more stickers.  I can't even tell you how many plastic containers (with lovely printed labels) I have filled with my artsy-crafty life supplies.

When I fell in love with making jewelry a few years back, my joy of hoarding spread to beautiful beads.  I should probably feel guilty that these pretties are only my treats to look at, sorted out in color-specific drawers with lovely printed labels.  Since I don't feel guilty at all about my collection I figure it's a safe time for me to start actually using them.  If you're a bead afficionado, then you know that handmade beads aren't inexpensive, so these bracelets aren't either. But, since they're a little gallery all on their own, I think it's totally worth using them all up!!

Lampwork glass discs from HMB Studios
Lampwork rondelles from Lisa New
Plus...beans from South America, a bit of Javanese
glass (which is so appropriate because we studied
Indonesia today in class), and a few ceramic pieces.

Plus...beans from South America, some Javanese

So what sort of collection do you have?  Are you keeping it just for yourself?  What are you saving all those beads for?  haaaaaaaaaa

Some Lucky SueBeads

Gotta give a shout out to my bead swap bud, Sue Kennedy, with these earrings!
Sue sent me a great selection of beads, but the bestest ones are the ones she made.  For these two pairs of earrings, I picked some pairs :  one set of lampwork glass and one set of her new enameled beads.
First, the vibrant red enameled bits are combined with some bronze-colored copper coils that I twisted for a nice dramatic dangle.  Then, for the second pair, the olivine green lampwork rounds are set up with some striped agate and purple, yes, bright purple, coils.

I think it's so cool that a session at the work table can come up with such different pieces...but with just the perfect things in common:  awesome handmade beads.

Feel like getting your shopping on?
First stop at
my etsy shop to see all the latest goods--I just added a few earrings and some necklaces.

Bangles! Mini Art Bead Collections!

My latest projects...

Inspiration?  Can you see the Totally Twisted in these?  haaaaaaa  My take on Kerry's projects from the book...It’s not just a bangle, it’s a mini art bead collection!

I used tons of great art beads from lots of different sources (all listed below with their Etsy seller IDs)...

For this one...
- Big enameled metal by Barbara Lewis at PaintingwithFire
- Lampwork glass by Cherie Ranfranz at Happyskull
- Polymer by Heather Powers at Humblebeads
- Lampwork glass by Karen Richards at LibelulaDesigns
- Lampwork disk by Heather Boardman at HMBStudios

For this bracelet, I used:
- Polymer clay from Doreen at Doreensbackyardbeads
- Lampwork disks from Heather at HMBstudios
And, then I couldn't resist mixing up the metals along with some more of those great round beads and some faceted lemony quartz.

And, some of my Air Force Blue beads from HMB studios for this pretty blue and silver number.

All of these are available for your shopping pleasure in my Etsy shop!

Yes, Actually

I spent the day home sick on the couch today.  Yuck.

But, I have something to share...another piece with the turquoise-purple-yellow color scheme.  This is a casual little necklace that I call "yes, actually" in the spirit of yes, those colors go together quite well.  There's turquoise, amethyst, and a sweety lemony quartz.  Plus, the art glass focal on this piece is a Gardanne glass bead by Anne.  The colors are all there in one bead, so I had to use it!  She puts out new beads every Wednesday and has a giveaway going on, so go check out her blog!
(It's for sale, too!) It's sold!

Adventures in Polymer

Check these out!
Of course there's a story behind these pretties (which are in my Etsy shop if you feel like you have to own them! haaaaaa)

I attempted again, recently, to teach a class.  I'm now officially one of the "visiting instructors" at our new local JoAnn's fabrics.  I'm not a huge fan of the actual specified projects (even though I probably shouldn't say that, they're not very pretty) so I haven't been trying hard enough to market them...I know, my bad.  So, last Sunday, even though I didn't have anyone signed up for the class, I took all my goods into the store's classroom and hung out and played.  The classroom is near the checkout line, so all the folks going through line could see what I was doing...I figure the more curiosity, the better, right?  I ended up with a young lady, Rebecca, and her mother helping me with inspiration.  They stayed and played for nearly an hour and a half!  We had such a great time!  She's a budding fashion designer, so she ended up with quite a few new accessories ready for her mom to bake up when they got home.  And I ended up with some kickass beads.  I have to give two shouts out to my polymer teachers:  Susan Gantz, back in Virginia, and Andrea Beeler, local here in Montgomery.  Susan helped me see all the potential in a little squeezy extruder and Andrea showed me how to shape beads.  I'm not perfect at any of these things, but I still love these results!

Plus, there's a reason I was using these particular colors...the ABS Turquoise Challenge.  This post came out weeks ago and since then I've had lots of ideas bouncing around in my head about how to use these colors.  I obviously have problems because I'm still in the yellows too much...gotta think more orange-y.  I still have plenty of clay and a whole week off of school for spring break next week, so I'm ready!

Fave Artist Resources - Polymer Clay

It's #4 of 5 in the resource listing extravaganza from last week's giveaway. This one's focused on polymer clay...this is one medium I can actually handle. Mind you, I'm a novice, but it's still such a fun material to work with. Most of the links are shops but some are just for inspiration! I don't intend to generalize an artist into a particular category, but had to make a few choices just to make it easier--so, feel free to explore and see all the cool things these artists have to offer! Most importantly, they're not listed in any particular order...go see them all!

Fave Artist Resources - Metal

It's #3 of 5 in the resource listing extravaganza from last week's giveaway.

This one's focused on metal. I don't intend to generalize an artist into a particular category, but had to make a few choices just to make it easier--so, feel free to explore and see all the cool things these artists have to offer! Most importantly, they're not listed in any particular order...go see them all!

**Another important note that I'd like to pass along is the emphasis on "original art" which means that when designs are stolen or copied, it's not a good thing. Green Girl Studios (from the list below) is just one of several artists whose work has been blatantly copied by Forever Silvers. Please head over to Cynthia Thornton's blog for more information and to find out how you can support independent creativity and thwart thieves.**

Fave Artist Resources - Ceramics & Porcelain

Here's #2 (of 5) in the resource listings from last week's giveaway. (Yesterday's was on glass artists.) Giving love to our fellow artists is the focus of Heather's post today on her Humble Beads blog...so, it's only fitting that we have another resource list to point you in lots of new directions!

So, today's list is focused on earthen clay: ceramics & porcelain. Again, most of the links are shops but some are just for inspiration! I don't intend to generalize an artist into a particular category, but had to make a few choices just to make it easier--so, feel free to explore and see all the cool things these artists have to offer! This is just a starting point for your adventures...I know every artist isn't on here, but we have to start somewhere. I've done some major shopping and am loving some of these new treats. The blueish-purple rustic zinnia pendant from Classicbead was a treat in the mail today!

Fave Artist Resources - Glass

The response to my giveaway this week was overwhelming and wonderful! I decided (thanks to Erin's suggestion!) to gather up all the input and put them into a lists of resources...I'm separating them into different genres for different days. Most of the links are shops (because shopping is the best!), but some are just for inspiration and entertainment! I don't intend to offend any artistan by generalizing into particular categories, but I had to make a few choices just to make it easier for the listing (and the shopping)--so, feel free to explore and see all the cool things these artists have to offer! Additionally, they're not listed in any particular order...go see them all! Here are just a few pics from my shopping adventures.
